    Sharecropping was a farming system in the American South after the Civil War. Poor farmers rented small plots of land from a landowner.

    They paid rent by giving a large share of their harvested crops to the owner. While slavery was forced human ownership, sharecropping was a legal labor contract.

    However, it often trapped poor workers in endless debt.
